20 Special SXSW Foursquare Badges and How To Unlock Them

Here's how I did in Austin / @ SXSW these past...

Austin, TX is the place to be right now. South by Southwest kicks off today and runs until March 16th. SXSW is a one-two punch combo Conferences & Festival. It bundles the hottest original music, independent films, and emerging technologies into a glorified uber-cool, nerd-fest. The latter portion – emerging technologies – is what captures my attention. SXSWi is described as:

An incubator of cutting-edge technologies, the SXSW® Interactive Festival brings together the world’s most creative web developers, designers, bloggers, wireless innovators, content producers, programmers, widget inventors and new media entrepreneurs. Five days of captivating keynote presentations and provocative panel sessions provide hands-on training as well as big-picture analysis of the future of this industry. In addition to the bountiful business opportunities at the Trade Show & Exhibition and the hands-on gaming fun at the ScreenBurn Arcade, SXSW Interactive provides a full array of exciting evening events to entertain attendees.

With so much to between the events, networking, panels and parties. Two key activities:

  1. Planning your schedule: Plancast is popular to stay organized and keep others informed.
  2. Bragging about what you did, who you did it with and where you did it: Foursquare is among the top choices. (Location is the buzz – look for more of this to come)

If you’re at SXSWi, try to unlock these special achievement badges made exclusively for attendees:

Animal Collect: See three bands that have an animal in their name.

Austin Explorer: Check in at 5x in Austin locations. HINT: Seek out new adventures and badges shall be yours.

Bands on the Run: See seven bands in one day. Yes, Seven.

Decathlon: Check in at 10 SXSW parties.

Early Adopter: For those who checked in last year & check in again this year. HINT: You should have been here last year!

Far Far Away: Check in outside of SXSW territory – or maybe when you’re in a cab. HINT: “TAXI!”

Fixin’ Wagon: Check in here if you find yourself eating street meat. HINT: Some of the best tacos come from shacks on wheels.

Groupie: Check in with the Foursquare team. HINT: “The Backstreet Boys of tech! The Menudo of the interne…. OMG! @NAVEEN JUST TOUCHED MY SHIRT!”

Hangover: No explanation needed. HINT: Late to bed, early to rise.

Hookup: Last year this badge was called Slut. Same accomplishment, different name. HINT: Late night is for exploring the hotel circuit.

Karaoke RV: Check in at the Karaoke RV. HINT: If you need a hint, you’re doing something wrong.

Name Dropper: “Shout” a celebrity showing. And no, your own name doesn’t count. HINT: There’s no shame in using checkins for web 2.0 celeb sightings.

Panel Nerd: Last year, you got this by checking in three times before noon at the convention center. HINT: Less partying, more working.

Porky: Check in while chowing down on some delicious BBQ. HINT: Oink oink!

SPINsider: Check in at three bands recommended by the editors of SPIN Magazine.

Super Swarm: Check in with more than 249 of your friends in one spot. HINT: Get your FlashMob on. XL’ed for SX.

Survivor: Check in at the airport when you leave. HINT: The airport is your beacon home.

Swimmies: Check in at a pool, hot tub – any body of water. HINT: Underoos make for a great bathing suit.

Tarantino: Check in at one (or more) showing of a Tarantino film. HINT: That Gold badge works for movies too, you know?

Trailblazer: Check in at three shows beyond Downtown Austin.

Let me know if you discover other special Foursquare badges…and how to unlock them.

Get Your Buzz On

How do I know if I have Google Buzz?
Image by Search Engine People Blog via Flickr

Google announced their latest social networking strategy by releasing Google Buzz yesterday…

Big step towards the centralized, portable profile mentality by combining the social buffet of stand-alone platforms & channels. In typical Google early-release fashion, it lacks certain items – such as the ability to update your Facebook/Twitter status…but will in time. Having the ability to cut and then measure is an impressive feat.

The various communications tools are being molded – the neat thing is that you’ll still have the ability to customize your own mold depending on your own usage. Email, chat, groups, status, files, geo-location…you’ll get to do all the things you’re already doing, under one roof: Google’s roof.

Here’s the TechCrunch Google Buzz article if you haven’t seen it yet.

Your thoughts? Is this simply Google Wave with training wheels?

6 Technologies That Will Change The Retail Automotive Market

going nowhere fast
Image by Pedro Moura Pinheiro via Flickr

I always enjoy ringing in the new year – the thought of working with a fresh slate to create bigger and better things is both refreshing and exciting. I’m curious to see how the newest technologies adapt to become viable solutions and strategies for progressive companies and individuals.

Here’s my list of the technologies with incredible potential for creating new solutions for automotive consumers and professionals in 2010.

  1. Real time Search: Google and Bing are squaring off in the first round of real time search results by providing real time results from the likes of Twitter and Facebook. While we don’t see these results in the same format as regular search results now, this will move from being a silo to being a primary search result visual. Search Engines such as Topsy will help the competition ramp up improved methods of displaying real time results from relevant and influential sources; other players in this space: Collecta and OneRiot.
  2. Geolocation Services: It will become increasingly easy to engage with prospects and customers with the advent of GPS style functions within mobile phones, social channels and smart phone apps which harness geolocation capabilities. Geolocation API’s will increase the ability to communicate with consumers; your own creativity is the limitation. For example, Whrrl’s Merchant Program is a simple way to extend your online footprint and offer an incentive for consumers to visit & engage them with new discount/promotional ideas.
  3. Mobile Video: Video has become a standard for the automotive segment within websites – mobile video will be a new frontier. Smart phone video usage will continue to explode as it becomes easier to stream from your phone – and to users phones. Network expansion from 3G to 4G and Google’s entry into the spectrum will open up new creative possibilities. The first step was gaining mobile acceptance and basic usage. Nine million users accessed their Facebook account via their mobile phone in 2008; that number exploded to 88 million in 2009. Huge opportunity for mobile video in 2010.
  4. HTML5: The newest version of HTML will host a suite of user features and benefits that improve online experiences. Rich applications (video & animation) will be easier to integrate as Flash and Silverlight won’t be as heavily relied upon. The goal is to create simple user experiences which function like a desktop application and also allows next-gen features such as offline data support and drag and drop capabilities. Hopefully more automotive web developers will recognize the opportunity this presents to provide dealers and their visitors more memorable and effective experiences.
  5. Social Centralization: This is my term for the direction of car dealer social networks and the value added services they will provide automotive professionals. Dealer network sites will evolve into centralized destinations that provide more than blog posts and discussions. As user acceptance and awareness increases, greater value will be driven by segment specific research, access to video libraries and vendor ratings. I see the culmination being the eventual cross-pollination of content and resources from major industry brands into their own specific communities. I also see the user gaining greater access to this content, whether they act as a contributor or a reader, via simpler access points such as smart phone apps.
  6. Social CRM: The entire CRM segment will be shaken up in 2010. Old systems dealers have been subjected will be turned upside down with the advent of more web based systems. The biggest changes could also come from the integration of the social channels to these systems to help improve and monitor customer communications. Major CRM solutions have already made this leap; I’m confident these solutions will make their way into the newest CRM tools being rolled out. I wouldn’t be shocked if an open source DMS-CRM solution sprouted up. Salesforce.com is adding a new data tool to their offering called Chatter. Other companies such as Yammer have rolled out creative solutions which mesh internal and external communication efforts.

We’re experiencing another round of significant changes in the automotive markets. Improvements in the retail process, customer service and online user experience will continue to move at break neck speeds in 2010 and aren’t limited to the above list; they’re certainly not limited to simply technological solutions – these are simply tools to help make the improvements easier to achieve. The biggest change will undoubtedly come from how the professionals in our market react to the needs of the automotive consumer and work towards creating a better overall customer experience.

The automotive retail change movement has already begun, how will you become a part of the solution?

Watch This

Take a look at the Artime watch by DesignBy8. This watch somehow tells the time from the wearer’s body rhythm and creates a very cool pulsating effect. When the face plate grid pieces slide away, the time is revealed by the intricate inner-workings.

Very intriguing. Very unique design. Watch this.

2 New iPhone Payment Solutions

Add “Retail Payment Solutions” to the list of potential hot growth segments of iPhone accessories.

The first two players to make waves:

  • Mophie: An iPhone attachment, whose only initial advantage seems to be its sleek integration with the iPhone. A simple phone case style enables full card swipe action for payments and money transfers.
  • Square: Launched by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey – this tiny iPhone add-on enables secure credit card payments with payment confirmation. Both are perfect for smaller retailers and those possibly rejected by traditional merchant account solutions.

The goal is to change the way retailers accept payments; no contracts, no additional bulky equipment and greater portability for those with mulitple locations or even those without a locations. Great wireless solution for trade show vendors, artists and home offices.

Look for more features, and even some competitors, after this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

Automotive Tech at CES

Consumer Electronics Show

Automotive technology is eagerly anticipated at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, especially with Ford providing one of the keynote speeches.

What’s hot in automotive technology for 2010?

  • Ford’s Sync Technology: Sync has matured from voice-controlled music, phone & 911 capability to now providing traffic & directional information; personalized traffic, turn-by-turn directional abilities and even voice-controlled news, sports & weather content.
  • Google Maps Navigation: Look for some type of announcement involving Google Maps Navigation, TomTom GPS & possibly Nokia; Turn-by-turn directions, more voice controlled goodies and new street view functionality may be wrapped up neatly in a creative solution that nobody saw coming.
  • On-Board WiFi: Sync enabled Ford vehicles will also turn into rolling WiFi hot spots with the help of  a simple data card installed within the framework of the car.
  • Pandora may announce a solution that integrates in-dash Internet radio

We can only hope these new items are aimed at providing efficient driver/passenger solutions and not additional driver distractions. Or, even worse, some type of social media distraction like a heads-up twitter display or a steering-wheel-keyboard Facebook integration.

Anyone working on an automotive kill-switch technology for mobile keyboards? That’s a solution we need.

How Will 3-D TV Affect Ad Spending?

double helix

3-D TV may hit the consumer segment as early as 2010. Could this create a new boost in TV ad spending?

I caught a glimpse of a 3-D TV demo at InfoComm earlier in the year. Simply spectacular – same high quality as a 3-D movie and without any glasses. If that’s the future of TV, I have to believe this could trigger a change in TV viewing habits – I’d definitely watch more content this way.

With potentially more viewers, will advertisers shift more of their spend towards TV? Will they take advantage of the new technology within their messages as well?
