Here’s a service that hits close to home for me – a premium car sharing service using location based technologies.

DriveNow provides fuel-efficient, premium vehicles through their ride sharing program. A special chip is added to your driver’s license allowing access to key-less vehicles at numerous pick-up/drop-off points. Reservations can be make online or their smart-phone app, although they aren’t necessary. Walk up, swipe your license and off you go. They’ll even deliver the car to you.

Seems very similar to ZipCar, differences being the premium-style services: driver’s license chips, no reservations needed and delivery services. (And the fact DriveNow is located only in Munich)

When it comes to location based marketing, the landscape is getting more complicated. And a lot more fun.

Check out Layar. It’s Augmented Reality software is positioned as the “Layar Reality Browser”

As more businesses join the location movement, a new level is being created – an augmented layer – in which additional information can be viewed in real time, all around you.

Put simply, the camera in your smart phone talks to the internal GPS device to find and display restaurants, bars and even people – anything that can be tagged online can be identified with this technology. (privacy squawkers will have a whole new bucket of complaints I’m sure.)

What’s the point? Much like other location based check-in software (Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, etc) businesses will have the opportunity to get creative with the information people can see – based on the layer they’re viewing. Special events, cross-promotional activity, tours, scavenger hunts…who knows?

I used this recently on an out of state trip to find a grocery store. I found it easier & faster than a text based browser search. And again, it was a lot more fun.

If you’re using a blogging theme such as Thesis, you don’t need to add additional SEO plugins; everything you need to affect these fields is easily accessible within the admin panel and the individual posting pages.

The word is spreading that Google may in fact have a new website penalty for using a WordPress SEO plugin. This plugin actually hides a portion of your page and won’t allow Google to index the page properly. It’s described as a “seven-day penalty” which prevents your post from being indexed for, duh – seven days. Keep in mind, your new post always appears on the home page of your blog – and this could have an impact on your blog’s index page.

Austin, TX is the place to be right now. South by Southwest kicks off today and runs until March 16th. SXSW is a one-two punch combo Conferences & Festival. It bundles the hottest original music, independent films, and emerging technologies into a glorified uber-cool, nerd-fest. The latter portion – emerging technologies – is what captures my attention. SXSWi is described as:
