1 Thing Missing From Social Media Optimization Lists

Listening.

Individuals and businesses alike work so hard at trying to engage, interact, promote, distribute, create link-bait, re-tweet etc.

Sure, those items need to be done and should find their place within the communication mix. Yet, listening is consistently overshadowed or just missing.

If your goal is effective social media, start listening more. Listen to your buyers, your industry influencers and anyone else willing to share their feedback & experiences.

These gems will improve user experiences while also teaching you incredible lessons about the people you think you know so much about.

Are you actually listening to the people who will make the biggest impact on your business?

4squarevision: Foursquare & Twitter Mash-up

Still looking for social media optimization proof that your business, organization or brand should have a Foursquare venue page?

Then check out what @JazzyChad recently whipped up: 4SquareVision A nice mash-up of Foursquare check-ins and Twitter status updates.

When was the last time you did something unique that made people want to visit your business?

Are you missing out on potential check-ins from your customers and visitors?

Rally Up – Really Like It

Social media noise getting to you too? Look no further.

The innovative minds over at 12Seconds launched a new location based social network called Rally. And its got some pretty nice features.

  • real friends get push notifications and end up in your feed
  • feed friends just end up in your feed (no push notifications – battery saver)
  • lurk allows you to see a friends’ content, but they don’t see yours (it’s okay to be a lurker)
  • mute turns off those people whose friend request you accepted under social pressure (we all do it)

Will this replace Foursquare? Probably not at this point. However, other apps and communities could learn a couple of tricks from Rally.

  • Sending messages directly to your friends is a nice feature
  • Quick access to maps & directions

Plus – I like the overly simplistic style and theme of the entire app. Black and White. Seems like they paid more attention to how people would like to connect with the people in their lives, rather than just making another pretty app. Oh yea, and the “stamps” you’ll get are pretty cool too…

Check it out…let me know what you think.

Miso: Tune In and Check In

Miso lets you add another dimension to your status updates and your location based check-ins: activity based updates – targeting what you’re watching either on TV or at the movies.

Integrate your activities with Facebook, Foursquare and/or Twitter account updates and share the TV show or movie you’re watching.

Many people update their Facebook status saying they’re watching TV; people check in at movie theaters on Foursquare – but not everyone doing so specifies exactly what they’re watching. Miso will, presumably, let you connect with other users with the same interests and tastes.

Think of the social media optimization opportunities for network TV shows and the movie industry. Creative promotional initiatives for activity based check-ins for a sporting event, a new network premier or hot, upcoming theatrical release have incredible potential to attract a new segment of viewers.

Plus – you can earn more badges. Those damn badges are so addicting.

UPDATE: Version 1.6 has been released. New Features now allow you to find and locate friends on Facebook and Twitter; profile updates now let you update your avatar as well.

What other opportunities do you see?

A Different Way To Use Foursquare

Need an easy way to keep track of your employees ? Looking for a cost-effective way to keep track of your staff who’s activities take them out of the office?

Get your employees to play Foursquare, create your parameters and have them “Check-In” while they’re out doing their thing. It’s free & it’s fun. Plus – you may uncover additional social media optimization opportunities for your business from clever usage of the “Tips” & “To Do” lists features.

Haven’t heard of anyone doing something like this – have you? (If it’s a stale idea – my apologies; seemed new to me.)

Is There A New Google Penalty?

Are you using an SEO Plugin on your website and/or Blog?

If you are, I recommend deleting the plugin and adding the necessary search engine optimization properties directly to your HTML files. If you’re using a blogging theme such as Thesis, you don’t need to add additional SEO plugins; everything you need to affect these fields is easily accessible within the admin panel and the individual posting pages.

The word is spreading that Google may in fact have a new website penalty for using a WordPress SEO plugin. This plugin actually hides a portion of your page and won’t allow Google to index the page properly. It’s described as a “seven-day penalty” which prevents your post from being indexed for, duh – seven days. Keep in mind, your new post always appears on the home page of your blog – and this could have an impact on your blog’s index page.

Have you seen this happen to your site? If so, please share the details.

20 Special SXSW Foursquare Badges and How To Unlock Them

Here's how I did in Austin / @ SXSW these past...

Austin, TX is the place to be right now. South by Southwest kicks off today and runs until March 16th. SXSW is a one-two punch combo Conferences & Festival. It bundles the hottest original music, independent films, and emerging technologies into a glorified uber-cool, nerd-fest. The latter portion – emerging technologies – is what captures my attention. SXSWi is described as:

An incubator of cutting-edge technologies, the SXSW® Interactive Festival brings together the world’s most creative web developers, designers, bloggers, wireless innovators, content producers, programmers, widget inventors and new media entrepreneurs. Five days of captivating keynote presentations and provocative panel sessions provide hands-on training as well as big-picture analysis of the future of this industry. In addition to the bountiful business opportunities at the Trade Show & Exhibition and the hands-on gaming fun at the ScreenBurn Arcade, SXSW Interactive provides a full array of exciting evening events to entertain attendees.

With so much to between the events, networking, panels and parties. Two key activities:

  1. Planning your schedule: Plancast is popular to stay organized and keep others informed.
  2. Bragging about what you did, who you did it with and where you did it: Foursquare is among the top choices. (Location is the buzz – look for more of this to come)

If you’re at SXSWi, try to unlock these special achievement badges made exclusively for attendees:

Animal Collect: See three bands that have an animal in their name.

Austin Explorer: Check in at 5x in Austin locations. HINT: Seek out new adventures and badges shall be yours.

Bands on the Run: See seven bands in one day. Yes, Seven.

Decathlon: Check in at 10 SXSW parties.

Early Adopter: For those who checked in last year & check in again this year. HINT: You should have been here last year!

Far Far Away: Check in outside of SXSW territory – or maybe when you’re in a cab. HINT: “TAXI!”

Fixin’ Wagon: Check in here if you find yourself eating street meat. HINT: Some of the best tacos come from shacks on wheels.

Groupie: Check in with the Foursquare team. HINT: “The Backstreet Boys of tech! The Menudo of the interne…. OMG! @NAVEEN JUST TOUCHED MY SHIRT!”

Hangover: No explanation needed. HINT: Late to bed, early to rise.

Hookup: Last year this badge was called Slut. Same accomplishment, different name. HINT: Late night is for exploring the hotel circuit.

Karaoke RV: Check in at the Karaoke RV. HINT: If you need a hint, you’re doing something wrong.

Name Dropper: “Shout” a celebrity showing. And no, your own name doesn’t count. HINT: There’s no shame in using checkins for web 2.0 celeb sightings.

Panel Nerd: Last year, you got this by checking in three times before noon at the convention center. HINT: Less partying, more working.

Porky: Check in while chowing down on some delicious BBQ. HINT: Oink oink!

SPINsider: Check in at three bands recommended by the editors of SPIN Magazine.

Super Swarm: Check in with more than 249 of your friends in one spot. HINT: Get your FlashMob on. XL’ed for SX.

Survivor: Check in at the airport when you leave. HINT: The airport is your beacon home.

Swimmies: Check in at a pool, hot tub – any body of water. HINT: Underoos make for a great bathing suit.

Tarantino: Check in at one (or more) showing of a Tarantino film. HINT: That Gold badge works for movies too, you know?

Trailblazer: Check in at three shows beyond Downtown Austin.

Let me know if you discover other special Foursquare badges…and how to unlock them.
