Visit Rochester Social Media Presentation Review

In July, Mike Johannson and Amanda Norsen hosted the VisitRochester.com Social Media Presentation. I was honored to present with RIT professor Dr. Neil Hair and Eliza Kozlowski from theĀ George Eastman House Outbreak on dvd

. Be sure to check out their social media efforts – excellent reference points for everyone.

Our presentations were similar in fashion, keeping with the core elements and philosophies behind current social media strategies. Common points included:

  • Create a defined plan, a consistent message and realistic goals
  • Focus on contributing helpful, valuable content to create a dialogue
  • Measure your efforts to ensure your objectives are on track
  • Monitor your brand and be responsive to all forms of mentions
  • Be creative and keep trying new ideas

One key point I hope everyone identified: Their respective industries, products and services are all fertile ground for creating new, extended conversations with their customers. The tools themselves shouldn’t be a concern.

The case studies highlighted examples within the retail automotive segment, academia and the arts. Opportunities exist to connect with visitors, provide memorable experiences and create new levels of loyalty regardless of the attendees’ market segments.

The level of interest from the guests and their desire for specific information was very high. Its an obvious indicator that we’ll continue to see more businesses taking a stab at various levels of social activity. However, this may also mean we’ll experience more of the “same old thing” type of approach from those efforts; creativity and uniqueness will also need to increase.

I’m curious as to how many people have either launched new initiatives or introduced new elements to their existing plans. Know of any examples? Please let me know…
